It is the first time in seven decades that there will be a King's Speech
King's Speech to set out Rishi Sunak's political battle lines ahead of general electionIt is the main ceremonial event of the parliamentary calendar and will see the King take part in a full procession from ahead of his speech.
It is the only regular occasion when the three constituent parts of Parliament – the Sovereign, the House of Lords and the House of Commons – meet. It is also the first time in seven decades there is a King’s Speech as previously Queen Elizabeth II presided over 67 state openings., where he sets out the legislative programme for the coming session. The King has no role in setting the legislative agenda, but reads out the list on behalf of the Prime Minister and the Government.
The monarch then arrives at the House of Lords and proceeds to dress for the occasion. King Charles will don the Imperial State Crown, his lengthy crimson Robe of State and Admiral of the Fleet Royal Naval dress uniform., who will wear the famous George IV State Diadem for the first time and will re-use her coronation gown, designed by Bruce Oldfield, for her first State Opening as a Queen consort.
