As portrayed by Tom Hanks in the 2007 biopic Charlie Wilson's War, the real-life Charlie Wilson lived an intriguing and consequential life. While the movie ends on a somewhat triumphant note, reveling in the supposed success of Wilson's mission to organize and support the Afghan mujahideen, it does not go into detail about what happened politically, or with Charlie Wilson, after the 1980s.

Charlie Wilson Retired From Congress In 1996 In real life, Charlie Wilson retired not long after the closing events of the movie. He declined to run for re-election in 1996, instead becoming a lobbyist on behalf of Pakistan. However, not long after this, he retired to the city of Lufkin in his native Texas. In 1999, he married his second wife Barbara Alberstadt, with whom he remained until his death in 2010.
Although his legacy has been defined by the clearly flawed decision to arm the mujahideen in Afghanistan – who later splintered to form a number of anti-American groups, such as the Taliban – Wilson was also a supporter of other American interventions abroad. For example, he also advocated for US involvement in the Bosnian war of 1992. However, as demonstrated by the movie, he will forever be associated with Operation Cyclone and its unintended fallout – for all his eccentricities in real life.
Charlie Wilson Passed Away In 2010 At The Age Of 76 The real Charlie Wilson passed away in 2010 from cardiopulmonary arrest. His death was met with a number of moving tributes from American public figures, such as then-Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, who said of Wilson: "America has lost an extraordinary patriot whose life showed that one brave and determined person can alter the course of history".
