Canadian Lance Stroll is one of 20 drivers competing in the world’s most popular auto racing series. This weekend the show moves to Montreal as the sport returns to one of its favoured destinations for the Canadian Grand Prix.
headline the list of drivers who risk their lives for the glory of the chase, the focus for the home fans will undoubtedly be on the ice-cool Montreal-born Canuck, who has a chance to rewrite the history books.
“It’s a great feeling to have a competitive car underneath you,” Stroll told the Toronto Star. “I was looking at the telemetry at one of the races earlier this year and I pulled up the same data from last year’s race [there], and I think we were something like four-and-a-half seconds quicker than we’d been in 2022, which is an insane amount [of time].”
In a breakthrough year for Aston Martin that has seen them rise to third place through eight races, the biggest surprise may have been Stroll’s rapid recovery from athat left his body battered just two weeks before the opening race in Bahrain. Stroll wasted no time securing an appointment with brilliant MotoGP surgeon Dr. Javier Mir with the goal of getting back in the car for F1’s season-opener. While his competitors banked the pre-season testing laps, he did the hard work in rehabilitation.
By that time, Ferrari had already snapped Stroll up to be part of its prestigious driver academy, with the roster then including the now-late Jules Bianchi and current Red Bull pilot Sergio Pérez. It’s also where the Canuck first met Alonso, who at that time was winning races for the Scuderia. “He very quickly adapted to every single situation,” Rosin said. “In his first year of Formula 4, he won [the championship]. First year of Toyota Racing Series, he won. In his second year of Formula 3, where drivers take more time to win — he won. Stroll’s mental strength was also very strong, because when he wanted to achieve something, he did everything possible to achieve that.”
