The Kamala–Walz DNC will be a high-stakes test.
The 2024 Democratic National Convention starts this week, but the date lurking in the back of everyone’s mind is 1968. Comparisons to that56 years ago have been a topic of conversation for the better part of a year, and for good reason. The number of technical similarities heading into the convention have been uncanny.
Back then, it was Vice President Hubert Humphrey taking the mantle from President Lyndon Johnson after just one term. Johnson, a Senate stalwart, had passed sweeping, ambitious legislation on domestic issues, expanding the welfare state and committing major resources to infrastructure spending.
Obviously, there are major differences between the two wars and the nature of the protests against them. In 1968 the draft was still active, and young Americans were being forced to fight, which added a personal life-and-death urgency to the demonstrations. Israel’s war effort wouldn’t be possible without U.S. military aid, but Americans are not being conscripted to fight in Gaza.Still, potential protests are a big question mark this week, and the history of DNC anti-war protests looms large.
