What Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng must do now

The Treasury must act quickly to calm panicky traders and reassure the markets

My wife was ungrateful when I gave her a wheelbarrow for our seventh wedding anniversary. ButThe next few days will reveal whether Friday’s not-mini-Budget was, or whether Liz Truss and Kwasi Kwarteng will get away with it for the time being and survive to fight future political battles – and, as they have pledge, transform Britain’s economy.

Mr Kwarteng’s focus on growth is overdue and his defence of businesses’ role in national prosperity is welcome. Yet. he has blundered by refusing to explain in detail how the Government plans to afford new energy subsidies, or the biggest tax cuts for half a century, without piling on national debt and hoping for unspecified growth.
