The researchers devised a program that displayed warped or distorted text that a computer couldn’t read, but a human could make out. The user typed the text in a box to gain access. The purpose of the wavy text images is to prevent computers from recognizing patterns in images that could be identified as text. This technique is similar to masking or hiding words. Because humans are accustomed to seeing and interpreting letters in various contexts, including different fonts and handwriting styles, they can typically identify the altered letters. However, some distortions can be so extreme that even human users struggle to decipher them.
