What Anita Hill wishes employers would learn from Clarence Thomas and Brett Kavanaugh: by mcgrathmag
Anita Hill never sought to have her name become synonymous with sexual harassment. Before she came into the public spotlight in 1991, she was a contracts and commercial law professor. She had done some work on equality issues, but she'll tell you that it was hardly the focus of her life.
"Lawyers like to say process matters, but I think that both the hearing in 1991 and the one in 2018 show exactly how much process matters," Hill said Thursday at the' New Rules Summit in Brooklyn. Hill said she believes firmly that following her allegations against Thomas in the early '90s, the Senate Judiciary Committee should have put a formalized process in place to receive complaints about nominees to benches. But there is no process, she said.
Part of what leaders need to do is to start acting sooner by training managers to identify bad behavior and stop it from escalating, Hill said."One of the real issues is that we don’t often act in our workplaces until something rises to the level of legal culpability. Then we get excited about it."
