NEW YORK — The best-in-show trophy at the Westminster Kennel Club dog show went to a petit basset griffon Vendéen, a first for the rabbit-hunting breed.
“I never thought a PBGV would do this,” handler and co-owner Janice Hayes said. “Buddy Holly is the epitome of a show dog. Nothing bothers him.” The breed is one of three recognized types of the griffon Vendéen, named for France’s Vendée region — besides petit, there are grand and briquet griffons. “Basset” is French for low-slung. The name is pronounced peh-TEE bah-SAY grif-FAHN vahn-DAY-ahn.
