WestJet begins using 'sustainable' biofuel blend on San Francisco route yycbiz
The airline will be using SAF made from lipids — tallow, used cooking oil, plant-based oils — with approximately a 35 per cent blend with jet fuel. SAF will only be used on the 40 return flights from San Francisco over the test period due to a lack of infrastructure and availability in Canada.
Lewis said SAF has already been used on about 440,000 flights globally, specifically with major airlines like Delta, United and British Airways. This is part of WestJet’s pledge to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, which also includes a partnership with Aero Design Labs that modifies the company’s 737-700 NG aircraft to reduce emissions and improve fuel efficiency.
