CAPE TOWN - Western Cape police reported that their efforts to remove illegal firearms from the streets of the Cape were gaining significant traction. In the first incident, officers responding to an active burglary in Wellington apprehended two suspects found in possession of a handgun. Police spokesperson Joseph Swaartbooi stated that in a separate incident, officers also arrested a 32-year-old suspect in Vredenburg.
'Public order police members deployed in Vredenburg to address the ongoing gang violence in the area conducted disruptive stop and search operations in Middelpos informal settlement. During these operations, they tactically entered a predetermined dwelling and conducted a search of the occupants and the entire premises, resulting in the recovery and confiscation of a variety of ammunition,' Swaartbooi explained. Three male suspects are anticipated to appear in court in the Paarl and Vredenburg Magistrate's Court soon following their arrests in separate incidents in Wellington and Middelpos informal settlement in Vredenburg respectively. Meanwhile, a suspected lobster smuggler was apprehended after being found in possession of 57 lobsters and over 800 lobster tails in Macassar. 'The 28-year-old man was unable to provide a valid permit for the possession of these goods and was detained for the unlawful possession of rock lobsters,' Swaartbooi added. Members attached to the Khayelitsha Tactical Response Team acted on information regarding the unlawful possession of lobsters at a property in Macassar on Sunday, January 19th. Upon a search, 57 whole lobsters and 876 lobster tails were recovered. The 28-year-old male suspect was subsequently arrested
