Western Cape traffic authorities issued 10,495 fines over the weekend for offenses including speeding, unroadworthy vehicles, and driving under the influence, as the region saw a tragic increase in road fatalities.

For many South Africans, the December holidays began on Friday and many locals have made for the coast in a bid to relax and recuperate ahead of a new year.
If you happen to be in the Western Cape, you may want to follow the letter of the law on the roads as authorities in the region are dishing out fines like its the hotel breakfast buffet. Since the start of the weekend Western Cape traffic officials have issued 10 495 fines for offences including speeding, unroadworthy vehicles and driving under the influence. As many as 23 864 vehicles were stopped at the weekend and 26 vehicles were impounded after failing roadworthiness checks. If you are looking to drink and drive or speed through the Western Cape this December, think again because authorities are on high alert. Unfortunately, this vigilance is required as already there have been 24 fatalities over the last weekend with seven of those people being pedestrians. “These tragedies not only leave families heartbroken but also have a lasting social and economic impact on our communities,” said Western Cape MEC of Mobility, Isaac Sileku. The MEC urges those in the Western Cape and around South Africa to reflect on how their choices on the road impact others. In an instant your life and the lives of others could change dramatically. “Let us all commit to practicing safer road-use behaviour. Together, we can create a culture of accountability and care that prioritises and protects the sanctity of human life. The Western Cape Government will continue its efforts to safeguard our roads.
