The MEC of education in the Western Cape, Debbie Schäfer, has called for an end to the one-metre social-distancing requirement in schools and for the full return of pupils in class
This comes after Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga said on Tuesday in a press briefing about school readiness that the rotation timetable would remain in place until such time as a decision about normal return of schooling had been made.
In July, following advice from the ministerial advisory committee, Motshekga announced that primary school pupils could go back to school full time, however, there should be one-metre social distancing between pupils. “In addition, there has been a huge psychosocial impact on our learners, teachers and even parents. Implementing a rotational model in schools is not easy. It requires dedicated planning and continued pressure to keep up with the curriculum, while teaching different cohorts of learners on different days.
A DBE report, which was presented to the portfolio committee on basic education last year, revealed that it may take up to eight years to recover from the learning losses resulting from the disruption caused by the pandemic. The report suggested that it was pupils entering grade 3 in 2030 who would get the right standard of education, but that this would also depend on the success of a catch-up programme.
