‘Don’t Be the Dirt’ advocacy rep says deferral motion was the right move
Don’t Be the Dirt Advocacy representative Graham Sanford said they are pleased that West Hants council voted to pause final approval of a rezoning that would allow residential development on a former farm in Hantsport and Hants Border. CONTRIBUTEDWINDSOR, N.S. — West Hants council has deferred a decision on a rezoning that would allow for a controversial residential development proposed for Bog Road in Hantsport and Hants Border.
Planner Paul Dec, of Upland Planning and Design Studio, made a presentation to council at a Feb. 28 public hearing. He said he represented the developer, Trimast Development and Construction. The company bought the property to “build a new community.” He said the plan is to retain and refurbish an old barn on the property as a community asset. The developer will explore potential connections to an area active transportation network and will consider underground power lines.
He said it’s not fair to council if he is the only one speaking out about it. Sanford said if he is the only one, it would probably weigh into council’s decision-making process, regardless of how well he presented the facts. So, he went door-to-door collecting signatures. Sanford said confirmation he received from the Department of Housing and Municipal Affairs of where the former town boundary line is located would put more area into current residential zoning if the boundary is the determining factor.
Sanford said it’s within council’s purview to stop, ask more questions and do further study before proceeding to approval. He said the major issue for him, and other concerned community members, is 26 acres of farmland in behind the five subject lots on Bog Road.
