Research Identifies Capacities (Or Not) of Nigeria, Ghana, Gambia to Meet Climate Change Pledges PremiumTimesng: WestAfrica
has revealed the capacities or otherwise of three West African countries to meet their climate change pledges.
According to experts, Africa's vulnerability to climate change suggests that governments must join the rest of the world in taking ambitious climate action to increase the continent's resilience and adaptive capacity to climate change. However, a major question remains whether Africa can meet the ambitious climate pledges they are making, particularly with a widespread apprehension about the feasibility of African climate pledges.
Extensive research has shown that the ability of countries to implement ambitious climate policies to drive the transformation towards low carbon economies depends on a number of specific dimensions of 'feasibility' and 'enabling conditions' which operate across multiple scales, including political, socio-economic, technological and institutional factors.
With respect to social dimensions of feasibility, the emphasis is the extent of climate change awareness in the case study countries and the degree of agitation and mobilisation for strong climate action by citizens and civil societies.

Invasive Mosquito Linked to New Malaria Outbreaks in AfricaEthiopian scientist Fitsum Tadesse has presented research that suggests a malaria outbreak in the city of Dire Dawa was strongly linked to the invasive Anopheles stephensi mosquito specie, causing a large malaria outbreak in Ethiopia. The number of cases reported in the city jumped from 205 in 2019 to 2,400 in the first five months of 2022, largely in the dry season. This mosquito specie is typically found around India and Iran. But in 2012, it was spotted in Djibouti and has now also been found in neighbouring Ethiopia, Sudan, and Somalia, as well as Nigeria. According to Thomas Churcher, a professor of infectious disease dynamics at Imperial College London who was not connected to the research, the specie could further spread malaria in Africa. In 2020, 95% of the world's 627,000 malaria deaths were in Africa.
