Hundreds of people left emergency rooms across the province last year due to long wait times, including at Valley Regional Hospital. - ContributedWOLFVILLE, N.S. — Back in 2010, Dr. John Ross released his report on emergency departments in Nova Scotia. The good doctor looked at our troubled hospital emergency rooms way before COVID-19 set in.

It is true paramedics were not normally functioning inside hospitals, but they are trained to deliver emergency care 24/7. But there are too few of them to see that as a Band-Aid against some of the tragic stories coming out of our ERs.The provincial NDP released records showing more than 40,000 people left the emergency room without being treated in 2021, up 60 per cent from the year before.

The Houston government is looking at a $506.2 million deficit largely because of the premier’s pledge to spending significantly more on Nova Scotia’s unhealthy medical system. The most recent provincial budget contained $5.7 billion for health care spending — an increase of $413.4 million. Canada has roughly 2.5 beds per 1,000 people. According to a BBC survey, both France and Germany have double that number. In fact, Germany can boast 7.8 beds per 1,000 humans.

Nova Scotia conducted a painful revitalization of hospital services in the mid-1990s and fewer beds were the result. That year’s budget got a boost, but was it wise to chop two small hospitals in Kings County?
