“We need to think differently and look for upstream solutions.”

During long term pandemic lockdowns, he noted, there was a challenge to eat well and deal with stress. During that time, we also relearned to help one another, and that social interaction is important for collective wellness.Regarding healthy eating, he paraphrased author Michael Pollen’s advice to eat real food, not processed. Not too much and mostly plants. Strang recommended the updated Canada Food Guide that calls for half of our plates to be covered in fruit and vegetables.

“As individuals we tend to focus on ourselves,” he said, and we ought to learn from others how to deal with stress. “It’s OK to say I’m not OK.” A board member at Feed Nova Scotia, Strang thanked the farmers present that day for contributing to our collective food security by partnering with Nourish Nova Scotia. He understands that the provincial economy makes sourcing affordable housing and healthy food a challenge. Climate concerns will likely heat up the Valley and could disrupt life, but the chief medical officer is reassured by the caring for others he has observed.
