The draft health guidance says more people will benefit from access to online support.
Their success will be judged on the change in people's weight, how often they complete the programme and the number of appointments needed and cost of medicines prescribed.
Some patients may need to be given a tablet computer and mobile internet connection to access the apps, it added. The technology aims to provide support for those who are not able to attend face-to-face appointments with weight management services, affecting 10-30%, or who do not have access to local help or are on a waiting list.Only those with a BMI of 35 plus a weight-related illness, or slightly less in some cases, will qualify to use the apps.
"The newest obesity medicines have the potential to help patients lose significant amounts of weight and reduce related conditions, but it's vital they are used alongside diet, physical activity, and wider behavioural support to help stop people regaining weight," he said.
