Weehawken over Elmwood Park - Football - NJIC Union Division Championship
Following the graduation of 10 senior, several of them two-way starters, it would have been hard to envision Weehawken matching the success of last year’s NJIC Union Division championship team.
Wells’ second TD, a 7-yard run with 7:25 remaining in the game, made it 20-7 and De La Hoz put the exclamation point on the winningest season in Weehawken history with a 2-yard TD run that made it 28-13 with just 48 seconds left. Campi remembers his first year as Weehawken head coach in 2019 when the team started the season with just 21 players and was down to 15 when it forfeited the final game of its 0-8 campaign.
Only a handful of the 30-plus players are seniors, so a move to a tougher division in the NJIC is anticipated. With that comes a greater challenge in competition, but also a chance to qualify for the state tournament, something that hasn’t been done since 2012. Teams in the NJIC Union Division are ineligible for the state tournament consideration.
