Ruling party staff members hit by an ‘economic meltdown’ will down tools to join alliance partner Cosatu in the national shutdown scheduled for Wednesday.

ANC employees have not received any salary increases in the past four years while the cost of living continues to rise – which is even more reason to join the planned national strike led by the Congress of South African Trade Unions , according to national staff representative Mvusi Mdala.

In addition, the governing party has been unable to pay salaries on time for the past year, while the provident fund, unemployment insurance fund and medical aid have been unpaid since 2018. ANC staff protest against unfair labour practices outside Luthuli House in Johannesburg on 6 September 2021. The aim of the strike is to demand urgent action from policymakers and decision-makers to take drastic steps to avoid an economic collapse which Cosatu believes is threatening the lives of millions of workers and the poor.

Cosatu has also red-flagged the recent spike in the cost of living, as South Africans buckle under drastic fuel and electricity price increases.
