South Africa is continuing Madiba's legacy by promoting peace on the continent, President Cyril Ramaphosa has said.

In his weekly newsletter on Tuesday, the president paid tribute to the former president Nelson Mandela as the world commemorated International Nelson Mandela Day.

"This is in testament to his role as a revered statesman, unifier and above all, as a peacemaker," said Ramaphosa."They were relevant when he was a statesman on the world stage, and they are even more relevant today with many parts of our continent and the world embroiled in conflict," the president said.

South Africa is also playing a role in facilitating dialogue, conflict resolution and providing technical assistance in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and was involved in the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement between the government of Ethiopia and the Tigray People's Liberation Front.
