After multiple players stepped up to address the team at halftime, Ohio State responded by outscoring Utah 27-10 in the second half to end the season with a Rose Bowl comeback win.

For the first 30 minutes of Saturday’s Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, it didn’t look like it was going to be a night to remember for the Ohio State football team.

Had Ohio State continued to struggle in the second half and lost the Rose Bowl, it would have sealed the 2021 season’s fate as Ohio State’s worst season of the last 10 years. The Buckeyes would have both lost three games and failed to reach 11 wins for the first time since 2011. Both sides of the ball played a big role in the comeback, as the defense needed to play much better in the second half than it did in the first half to give Ohio State a chance to win. The defense did just that, holding Utah to just 139 yards of offense after halftime.

On a day where they didn’t have the benefit of playing with Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson and where they had to overcome plenty of adversity to lead the Buckeyes to a win, both Stroud and Smith-Njigba stepped up to finish their sophomore seasons with their finest performances yet.
