WASHINGTON ?— Michigan State University undergraduate Ning Peterson and her roommate were relaxing in their dormitory room on Monday night when the text messages came, informing them of a shooter on their college campus and instructing them on what to do: Run. Hide. Fight.

“It was pretty scary,” said the 19-year-old, adding that there were rumours that the gunman was setting off fire alarms and pretending to be the police to trick students into leaving their shelters. “People didn’t even want to leave their rooms even though the corridor was technically supposed to be safe.”

MSU statistics major Hanwen Sullivan, 22, was at a bible study meeting when the shooting started and immediately called his younger brother, who also studies at MSU, to make sure he was safe. Mr Sullivan, who studied in Singapore from primary school until he moved to Michigan for college, said he and his Singapore friends had talked about gun violence when discussing where to attend university.

“Unfortunately, I’ve seen a lot of gunshot victims. More than I would want to, but it’s part of the American way of life, so to speak, sadly,” said Dr Wong, who is currently a family physician in Singapore.
