It's more fruit-forward—but also softer, less acidic.
. And for my post-breakfast, pre-lunch snack—and then again for my post-dinner dessert—I open jars of jam.I figure the money I spend on jars is the money everybody else spends on beer . Still, I try to be reasonable. Most of the jam I eat is Bonne Maman, the dependably delicious and relatively affordable French brand that can be found in most everyday grocery stores.
The Intense line of Bonne Maman jams come in smaller jars, with this promise blazed across the front: “More fruit and 39% less sugar than regular preserves.” I am an unabashed sugar lover, but I admit that the prospect of a less-sweet jam grabbed me. So I brought a bottle of strawberry Intense home with me. I used it in all the ways I use normal Bonne Maman and I found it noticeably, and pleasantly, less sweet. Spread on toast, I noticed that it was less like jam and more like concentrated juice: more fruit-forward, but also softer, less acidic.
Which is to say that I liked it, I liked it very much…but I found it to be the exact opposite of intense. So as I quickly made my way through the jar, my interpretation of the name changed. Perhaps Bonne Maman Intense is named not for how the spread is supposed to taste, but rather for the type of person who needs it.
