Tis, Friday

Nowadays many have either closed down or been converted to offer other cuisines, including dubious kebab shops, and Darwen is no different. But one way of looking at this shift could be that it's simply a case of survival of the fittest.

So I decided to visit Marsh House Chippy, for the first time in probably a few years, to see if it still warranted to be considered as the best in Darwen. I ordered a meat and potato pie, chips and gravy which came to a very reasonable £5.90. For me a pie isn't a proper Lancashire pie unless it's made by Holland's and the Baxenden-based pie factory supplies pies to 1,250 chippies across the North West, including Marsh House. The only disappointing feature, when you buy a pie from a chippy, is that it will undoubtedly have been cooked in a microwave and kept warm, which means the crust doesn't go 'crusty' like when you cook it in an oven at home.
