Pea wet - or pey wet depending on where exactly you're from in Lancashire - is a well-known classic in our county's fish and chip shops.
I'm led to believe that an original 'pea wet' is usually the juices served over peas, whereas the more intricately sounding 'Smack Barm Pea Wet' is where the real enjoyment lies. Served in between a classic barmcake , the Smack Barm Pea Wet is a potato scallop, or Dab if you're from Blackburn, with the pea juices to provide a condiment of sorts.
Greeted by the friendly staff, I'm worried about asking for a Smack Barm Pea Wet without a broad Lancashire accent, so I instead ask for a 'pea wet' to save any embarrassment. However, this just raises more questions than it answers as I'm given the choice of where my pea juices should go. I'm told it's going to be too hot to devour straight away so, after having only been charged £1, I make my way happily back home to enjoy it. Having successfully cooled down during the trip, I'm in safe territory to try my first ever pea wet.
