A Whitney Pier group has stepped forward to come up with a resolution to what has turned into a controversial Santa Claus parade route set for next month. | SaltWire

From left, Whitney Green, Mike Vickers, Mike's mother-in-law Marie Green, and cousin Melissa Vickers, all from Whitney Pier; Megan MacAulay of Navigate Startup House, Michaela Epifano, communications and events co-ordinator at the Cape Breton Partnership, and Alisha Barron, owner of Fired Creations - The Pottery Painting Café.

“The parade is not going back to the municipality — and complaining about it is not going to change things,” Vickers said Sunday. “So I started thinking about, hemmed and hawed for a couple of days, then thought if I reached out to the Sydney committee — figuring that someone else might have done it already — and offered to help out, if that was possible.”

“We went, spent an hour-long meeting hashing things out and figured out what we needed to do,” Vickers said. “It really didn’t take much.” Resolving to meet with the Sydney committee, Vickers said, capped off a week of gripes, complaints and bickering within the community and online over not including a “traditional” Santa Claus parade route starting or ending in the Pier, as per a decades-old gentlemen’s agreement between four Pier businessmen and the former City of Sydney, which carried over when CBRM formed in 1995.

In their talks, Vickers said his mother-in-law explained to Barron and her committee all about the parade history in Whitney Pier. The last moving Sydney Santa Claus parade was held in 2019. According to CBRM spokesperson Christina Lamey, the municipality organized the parade only after no volunteer group would step forward to offer up their services. CAPE BRETON POST FILES - CAPE BRETON POST FILESCBRM communications and information officer Christina Lamey said everyone is relieved to hear Vickers’ group and Barron’s committee worked together to reach a civil solution.
