'We live five minutes away but left at 4am to join crowds in Windsor to welcome the Queen home' 💬 Jan Kennedy, 75, said she felt the Queen was their next-door neighbour – “She loved it here so much that she took it as her last name”
Even though this group of friends live five minutes away, they arrived at the Long Walk at 4am in the morning to secure their front row spot. From left: Catherine Inbar, Daren Collins, Paul Magro, Jan Kennedy and Pam Sandhu. Mrs Coombes, who travelled from Ashford, in Kent, to stand with thousands of others on the Long Walk, said: “We come up to the Castle a lot, and she’s not going to be there.
The aching soar of the bagpipes gave way to resounding brass and horses cocked their heads, but the soldiers in the Household Calvary kept stoic expressions as they and hundreds of other military personnel, including 1st Battalion Coldstream and Grenadier guards, kept marching. The silence was broken by a smattering of claps as the hearse moved slowly past mourners. Once the procession made its way out of view up to the Chapel steps, there was a more resounding applause.
The Queen came to the Castle as a 14-year-old girl and spent most of World War II in it as a safe haven from Nazi bombing in London. She is known to have particularly loved the vast 13 acres of surrounding parkland and grounds. She moved back to Windsor Castle after the pandemic hit and stayed there for the next two years, making it her permanent residence in March this year.
