Labour's shadow local government minister warned councillors not to expect extra funding if the party wins the next general election
Labour cannot commit to giving local councils more cash despite more than a decade of town halls being under-funded, a party frontbencher has said. Sarah Owen, who is the shadow minister for local government, told Labour councillors at the party's conference in Liverpool today that they have to be 'realistic' about funding.
Manchester council leader Bev Craig, who was speaking at the same fringe event at the Labour Party conference, said that conversations about funding with her party have been 'encouraging'. She referred to recent comments by deputy leader Angela Rayner - who is the MP for Ashton-under-Lyne - about funding councils on the basis of need.
"But actually that's not the kind of conversation that we have or we want to have. This is about how we do this together. "For me I think this is about having that grown up conversation about what we're going to inherit. I listened to Keir on Radio 4 recently and he was talking about we are not inheriting what we did in 1997."We're in a very different situation and I think we have to be realistic. People are fed up with people promising the earth and not delivering.
