💬 “We have no idea what is going on and there is a very strange atmosphere in Moscow”
“Because of the situation in Russia, because of the conflict, the ability of the UK to conduct an extraction operation as we did in Sudan would be severely limited, probably to the point of impossibility,” he said on Monday.
Mr Stevens said that expats have been unable to access support through the embassy in Moscow with the helpline often out of action. i called the line to find it working but an embassy staff member acknowledged that support for British nationals seeking to flee was limited. The Foreign Office updated its travel advice for Russia after the uprising to state that Wagner forces “had occupied Rostov” and continued to urge nationals to leave the country by any means necessary.
Another British citizen based in Moscow said Telegram groups for expats did not show “people making a dash for it.”Mr Stevens said there was realism within the British community that the security situation could yet deteriorate further, but expressed hope that this might lead to regime change, a scenario that has never been more popular.
“The feeling I get speaking to people here is that they just want to get Putin out and the lunacy he has created,” he said.
