Hockey tournament planned, GoFundMe to be launched
A 22-team hockey tournament in support of the Pierplex, also known as the Whitney Pier rink is scheduled for March 16-19. JEREMY FRASER/CAPE BRETON - Jeremy FraserSYDNEY — The community of Whitney Pier is rallying behind efforts to save itsbut financial issues have troubled the facility in recent years.are always organizing revenue streams and fundraising initiatives to aid operating efforts, but now a number of community ventures are emerging and proving successful.

My little boy is getting into it now and I like watching him fly around the ice.”
“Seven years ago the rink was closing. It is still open,” Wilson said. “That should best describe it. It’s day-by-day.” “Things break and it puts you in a pickle, but every rink around here just pays the bills. I don’t think there’s a rink in Cape Breton that makes money.”The Whitney Pier rink is in need of some upgrades and a community group has stepped forward with some fundraising ideas to help.
