Fighting hunger is something any citizen can do by donating to charity or writing letters to Congress advocating for food aid programs
. We need this action today with food prices high and hunger a problem everywhere.Indiana Public Radio recently ran a story about the “Grow a Row” campaign which asks gardeners to help in the fight against hunger.
We also need that kind of spirit from Congress. What won’t end hunger is Congress making cuts to food aid like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program . Poor families need SNAP to purchase groceries. With Congress cutting SNAP that puts even more pressure on our nation’s food banks who are already stretched beyond their capacity. Congress should listen to the food banks when they say it is too soon to reduce SNAP benefits.
In Somalia, repeated drought has ruined farming and is causing starvation. People are desperately searching for food in Somalia. According to UNICEF “an estimated 43,000 excess deaths might have occurred in 2022 in Somalia resulting from a deepening drought when compared with 2017 and 2018 drought crisis. Half of these deaths might have occurred among children under the age of 5.”
The D.R. Congo, South Sudan, Haiti, Afghanistan and so many other countries are in hunger emergencies either from conflict or drought. But so often relief agencies like the World Food Program, UNICEF, Save the Children, CARE, Catholic Relief Services, Mary’s Meals and others are short on funding. With global hunger emergencies getting worse the United States and other capable nations have to increase funding for food aid programs.
