After closing at the beginning of the pandemic, tourist favorite Lori’s Diner has reopened in San Francisco’s Union Square.

“We believe in Union Square,” Francisco Padilla, a manager at Lori’s Diner,Most of the 1950s-era memorabilia that was a hallmark of the restaurant is still there — including an actual car, a 1959 Ford Edsel, that sits in the dining room.

“We knew that we had to invest,” Padilla added. “Without the tourists, there’s no restaurants, and without the restaurants there’s no tourists. So they go hand in hand. We knew that we had to make the first move if we wanted this beautiful city to come back to life. So we made the sacrifice and investment to rehabilitate this location.”

Lori’s Diner has a lengthy history in San Francisco. The first outpost opened in 1986 at 336 Mason St., around the corner from Union Square, though it closed permanently in 2016 after 30 years in business. Four other locations sprouted up between 1993 and 2008, including one at San Francisco International Airport.
