Free safety inspections for school transport vehicles will be done at Gene Louw Traffic Training College in Brackenfell and the Beaufort West Vehicle Testing Centre.
While not a full roadworthy test, the inspection could help highlight potential problems with a vehicle. On Wednesday the 2025 school year kicks off. Ahead of the “first day of school” photos hitting social media, the Western Cape Mobility Department wants to insure that school children arrive at school safely.
The Western Cape Department of Mobility notes that this inspection is not a full roadworthy test and only intends to determine if a vehicle will be safe while in operation. The focus on these inspections will be tyres, brakes, lights, suspension, CV joints, electrical systems, exhaust systems, wipers and licence discs among other things. This may help vehicle operators more easily identify problems in their vehicle without having to pay mechanic a fee for a similar inspection.
That number is low but it does highlight a trend locally where vehicle factors play less of a part in fatal accidents.that vehicle factors accounted for just 4.2 percent of fatal accidents compared to 8.5 percent being caused by road and environmental factors and 87.3 percent caused by human factors.
In 2022, fatal crashes decreased by 1.5 percent. The RTMC notes that a number of interventions championed by itself and other transport related bodies help to lower the number of incidents on our roads. However, as with most things, private-public partnerships are vital in addressing road safety.
