Western Cape Premier Alan Winde has fired the first shots in the race to move to level 3 of the nationwide lockdown, which President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Wednesday evening would not be granted to every province or region
Ramaphosa announced that the national Covid-19 coronavirus command council was preparing for level 3, which will be implemented from the end of May, but only in certain areas.
The Western Cape has more than 50% of the country’s infections and the highest death rate, and on Wednesday night pundits were predicting that it would be best advised to stay on level 4. “The Western Cape government will use the process of consultation announced by Ramaphosa to make clear our position that the entire province must move to level 3 as soon as possible, preferably before the end of May,” he wrote.Western Cape Premier Alan Winde
He explained that a plan had been presented to Health Minister Zweli Mkhize this past Saturday to look at a data-led evidence-based approach to assist the Western Cape in dealing with Covid-19. The plan has since been adopted by Winde’s executive.
