The District 60 Board of Education unanimously approved a policy Tuesday at the Lincoln Center administration building in Waukegan enabling students with a need for remote learning, rather than in-person education, to attend one of two virtual schools.

Students — from those emotionally unable to sit in a classroom, to others whose academic acumen in a specific subject exceeds the capacity to teach them more — now have a virtual option in Waukegan Community Unit School District 60. One of the programs is the Illinois Virtual School based in Grayslake under the direction of Michael Karner, the Lake County regional superintendent of schools. The other is EdOptions Academy based in Minnesota. It will cost the district $2,500 per student.

” Board member Carolina Fabian said learning through a computer screen from a teacher and other students in the online classroom is the right option when the district does not provide it for someone like the student Hamilton described. “We don’t have self-contained emotional disorder classrooms in our district at the high school level,” Fabian said. “This is a policy that is very much needed for those students who have high anxiety or cannot regulate their emotions.
