DThe District 60 community is embracing the theme of “Fill Our Cup With Kindness” in October in observance of National Bullying Prevention Month in Waukegan, culminating with Bully Spirit Week starting Oct. 23 to promote the kindness theme.
As students, families, faculty and staff in Waukegan Community Unit School District 60 participate in National Bullying Prevention Month with fun activities promoting kindness to each other, there is a serious side to the subject. Though District 60′s policy gives bullying a precise definition, Tasha London, the coordinator of crisis intervention and social emotional learning, said it can also lead to violence, like other forms of harassment or maltreatment, such as fights among students.
“Without any way to respond, they can become thoroughly irrational. That can play a role making someone violent.” During 2022-2023 school year, there were 127 incidents of bullying reported, with slightly over half coming at the middle school level. The bulk of those were at Jack Benny, Miguel Juarez and John Lewis middle schools. Once an incident is reported, London said the school conducts an investigation to determine if the behavior fits the district’s definition of bullying.
