This made it even harder to find a suitable donor, as both organs needed to come from the same person, putting him on a waiting list with an average wait of two to three years.
During this time, Andy had to undergo dialysis for five hours at a time, three times a week. He also had to restrict his diet and his liquid intake to 500ml a day.Andy TaylorAndy, who works at the University of Hertfordshire, was able to find a donor in 2016 but ended up spending 10 weeks in hospital due to complications from the 12-hour surgery.Sport ended up being key to his recovery and he found himself following in his father’s footsteps.
His dad had suffered from the same condition, meaning Andy always knew he had a"50/50 chance" of having it too, and competed in the games several times. Andy won gold in men’s badminton at the British Transplant Games in 2019 and is heading to Perth aiming to add a World Gold medal to his collection.
