An investigation has been launched after water in a Cumbrian harbour turned luminous orange - as campaigners claim pollution from a nearby coal mine is to blame

“This pollution in the harbour looks like mine water – given the failure of finding and stopping the pollution source, it would be prudent to call a halt to any new mining in this area as a matter of urgency,” Ms Birkby said.

It says the company was granted an underground mining conditional variation licence by the Coal Authority – the latest term of it ran from June until October – but does not currently hold any licences from the Coal Authority.The orange-brown murky discolouration has been present in the harbour since November

“There is no evidence that this is related to any previous exploration work by West Cumbria Mining. They have not had any exploratory permissions since 2018 and do not currently have any licences relating the site.” He said in his opinion, it was not connected with West Cumbria Mining’s operation because it started late November and was continuing to happen now. “I just can’t see it [being connected], and I just think for people to speculate like that is very unhelpful. We are focused with the relevant organisations to find the source.
