The Springboks breathed fire, light, and ecstasy into a country of 62 million on a rainy and stormy Parisian night as they valiantly earned a second consecutive Webb Ellis Cup with a 12-11 victory at a mesmerised Stade de France on Saturday night. It was another one-point thriller in which the Springboks were held scoreless in the second half after being reduced to 14 men twice against a New Zealand side that also played 50 minutes with 14 after captain Sam Cane was red-carded.

The game was an immense struggled that lacked sparkling rugby but more than made up for that in sheer drama. The boot of Handre Pollard was also key as he kicked four first half penalties to give the Springboks the score on the board at full time. The 12 points that the Springboks scored is their lowest total in Rugby World Cup finals but enough for them to retain an unbeaten record in the big match.

In the 58th minute of the match Beauden Barrett dived over in the left hand corner shortly after an Aaron Smith “try” in the same place had been ruled out for an earlier knock on. That would prove to be the only try of the contest. However Mo’Unga missed the conversion which would have given the All Blacks the lead and Jordie Barrett also pushed a 75th minute penalty goal attempt wide of the posts.
