White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre will hold a press briefing following a historic strike by the United Auto Workers union, which went into effect early Friday morning.
The strike is being held at factories that are owned by three major car manufacturers: Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis. The employees are seeking a 36% pay raise over the next four years, a four-day workweek, pension benefits for all employees, an increase in paid time off, and other job protections.Talks failed in the final hours before the 11:59 p.m. deadline on Thursday when the three companies were unwilling to meet the demands of the union, particularly the 36% pay increase commitment.
General Motors and Ford offered a record compromise of 20%, and Stellantis offered a 17.5% increase, but the union did not accept it.
