Residents of Empangeni and surrounds are picking up the pieces while authorities are assessing the damage after a severe storm left a trail of destruction. ECRNewsWatch KZN

Resident Zonita Grobbelaar says it was a normal day and within in minutes, the skies started changing.

"The wind picked up and then it was just chaos. It was rain and hail and the wind was absolutely terribly. I myself was luckily not affected, but a lot of the houses, businesses and the fire station were affected. It looked like a tornado hit and had gone through town." Roxanne McLeod says her husband got home seconds before the storm started and sent her videos of their yard while she was stuck at work.

"It looked like a mini-tornado. We got palm trees in our yard. There were leaves everywhere and his windscreen got cracked with hail. My carport has got holes in it from the hail. It was horrendous.""You could hear people screaming in the roads and running in the rain. The rain and hail hit the windows and all of a sudden the ceiling came in in my office. The water poured in as if you had a fire hose in the building. In the church hall, you couldn't get to any equipment.
