In episode three of Chasing the Sun 2, the Springboks revealed finer details behind plan to call for a scrum off a mark against France at RWC.
Damian Willemse was responsible for one of the most iconic moments at the Rugby World Cup, and while the player has already explained his brave scrum call; the Springboks’ brains trust has now finally revealed the intricate planning that led to the call. took the bold decision to call for a scrum after taking a mark in the Springboks’ 22 against France. It was a decision that took most viewers by surprise as players will usually kick for distance, or tap and run from that position.
“I think the previous match , we had one scrum in the whole game.They love kicking long kicks that land in your 22, and then you have two options; you kick the ball out, it’s their lineout you, or you try and run it back to the 10-yard line where they stand waiting for you to win a big turnover.” “We try to get as many scrums, and I think after that, their kicks were much shorter or let it bounce into the 22,” the now Springboks coach explained.
