The author of How to Handle Black Tax like a Pro, Ndumi Hadebe, says her interest was sparked by the topical conversations around black tax on social media, which prompted her to offer her insights on the issue.
She explained that she was setting boundaries in some areas of her life and trying to figure out what she was doing wrong financially. She explains that her wake-up call came when she realised that, although she had started working at the age of 18, by the time she was 40, she had no investments or robust savings in place.
“Even though my black tax [contribution] was chosen [by me] as an adult, I was never really pressured [to do it] by my parents. I would do some black tax towards my cousin and, at some point, my brother. My parents are the kind that delay instant gratification.
