Thousands of revellers descended on Cape Town’s CBD last night as the Festive Lights Switch-on saw the city’s holiday season get underway in earnest.
Back in its original format after the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown, this annual event didn’t disappoint as it highlighted what the city has to offer and delighted families from all over the Cape Metropole.
This year’s Festive Lights event also rand parallel awareness campaigns around the spring cleaning and clean energy missions, which underpin how residents can live smart – all year round. An audience of just shy of 80 000 danced and sang along to some of Cape Town’s most popular performers including Emo Adams and Will Linely, among many others, before Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, officially flipped the switch.
Closing out the musical merriment on the night, the streets were jamming, as chart favourites, crowd pleasers and the multi-award winning, Mi Casa, known for their infectious blend of jazz, dance music, and R&B, as well as African and Brazilian traditions, lit up the stage post switch-on. The evening then wrapped up with a spectacularly choreographed video mapping lights display across City Hall.
