Many soccer fans were worried that Bongani Zungu's rash tackle may have ended Bernard Parker's football career.
Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Bongani Zungu was sent off following a tash tackle on TS Galaxy forward Bernard Parker.
The Bafana Bafana player was sent off in the 58th minute while Galaxy was leading 2-1 in the Carling Knockout Cup match played at the Mbombela Stadium. The home team scored two quick goals in the opening 20 minutes to stun the Brazilians however Rulani Mokwena’s side pulled one goal back 12 minutes into the second half. The former Bafana Bafana striker had to be stretchered off by the medics as he appeared to have broken his leg.
The match ended 2-2 after 90 minutes and the two teams could not be separated after extra time. Galaxy won 5-4 on penalties to dump Zungu and Downs out of the Carling KO. Many have feared that Parker might be forced to retire given his age. The former Kaizer Chiefs star is 37 and has been playing football for over 19 years and if this was his last game as a professional, it would be a sad way to end his illustrious career.Zungu is expected to miss action for two weeks but given the circumstances, he might be banned for more than three games should the PSL investigate the incident.
