Ahead of the dead rubber, which is expected to be played in front of a decent crowd, midfielder Luke Le Roux and defender Grant Kekana touched on the significance of this day in video messages that the Bafana media office has released

It comes two days after the funeral of Clive Barker, the former Bafana Afcon-winning coach who died last Saturday, and a day after the country commemorated its Youth Day.

The 1996 Afcon title, which Bafana won under Barker, remains South Africa's biggest achievement on the field. On this day in 1976, over 20 000 pupils from Soweto began a protest march, which spread across the nation like wildfire. In the wake of clashes with the police, and the violence that ensued during the next few weeks, government records show that approximately 700 people, many of them youths, were killed.

. “Of course, we all know what happened on this day in 1976. Many people lost their lives. It is because of them that we are living the life we are living,” said Le Roux, one of the youngest in the Bafana squad who plays for Varbergs Bois in the Swedish premier league.
