Waste collection services were suspended in various parts of Cape Town due to alleged extortion and threats directed to collection workers.
The City of Cape Town has confirmed that waste collection services in Gugulethu, Philippi East/Lower Crossroads and Nyanga have been reinstated under security protection and will resume according to the usual schedule from Monday, 9 October if all goes as planned.
The municipality said waste collection services in the above-mentioned areas were unfortunately temporarily disrupted because of threats and extortion. Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management, Alderman Grant Twigg said refuse collection staff will be working on Saturday, 7 October to attend to the backlog in the affected parts of Gugulethu, Philippi and Nyanga that did not receive refuse collection as scheduled from Wednesday to Friday this week.
