Long-awaited findings of ombudsman's report – which could recommend a compensation scheme – will be set out in Parliament on Thursday
Long-awaited findings of ombudsman's report – which could recommend a compensation scheme – will be set out in Parliament on Thursdayhave been warned that many of them may miss out on compensation, as an official report into the saga is finally released. The Waspi group wants at least £10,000 for all 3.6 million women who expected to get their pension at 60, but had to wait another five or six years due to increases to the state pension age.
“I would not be hopeful of huge payouts I’m afraid,” she added. “A scheme for those who can demonstrate they were the victim of failures by government administration and are facing hardship might be a possibility, but this would not satisfy most of the Wapsi women, I suspect.” Mr Webb, now a partner at pension consultants LCP, added: “There is no doubt that the Labour Party would like this issue resolved before the election rather than hanging over the next parliament. Neither government nor opposition will want to foot a multi-billion-pound bill.”
Angela Madden, chair of the Waspi group, warned the ombudsman that campaigners could take legal action if the body fails to recommend compensation. “We would consider taking action – in the courts if necessary,” she said.a PHSO memo leaked in November 2023 “I hope there will be a recommendation of compensation, and hopefully at a very high level. We want to see compensation of at least £10,000.”
