The attack on the Russian Beriev A-50 reconnaissance plane should be seen as part of Russia's wider war effort, including in Bakhmut, Newsweek has been told.

"For this attack to happen deep inside Belarus is aOn Tuesday, a leaked video of Lieutenant General Alexander Matovnikov dancing naked to music was posted to the Telegram messaging app.

Matovnikov is the deputy commander-in-chief of Russia's land forces and was appointed to the post in January 2020 by a Kremlin decree. He has been designated a"Hero of Russia," and has previously led military forces in the North Caucasus Federal District of Russia. He is believed to have spent more than three decades in the anti-terrorism unit of theRussia's military presence in Belarus currently falls under his charge, according to the British newspaper.
