Cam Talbot hasn’t carried his magic touch from December into the new year.
Following Friday’s 4-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins, he now owns a 2.95 goals-against average and .903 save percentage. In a league where somewhere in between .910 and .915 is generally considered the cutoff between good and not good enough, simply put the Senators need more saves.
• Or perhaps at the other end of the ice, where the Senators continue to make opposition goaltenders look good on many nights. The chances have been there, the finish hasn’t. Usually getting 45 shots on goal, as was the case against Pittsburgh Friday, should translate into a victory. Interestingly, though, the Senators have now lost 10 games in which they’ve had at least 35 shots. The only teams with more losses in plus-35 shot games are the Calgary Flames and Florida Panthers.
• Closely related to that are the glaring individual plus/minus numbers. In particular, Drake Batherson who leads the NHL with a plus/minus of minus 30. Alex DeBrincat is at minus 18 and Shane Pinto at minus 17.
